Covid-19 pandemic requires everyone to stay at home, avoid the crowd and keep their distance. This of course makes kite fans unable to express their creativity. Because to be able to fly a kite, especially large ones, it takes a minimum of 5-8 people. Unlike the case with a small-size kite that can be flied by only 2 people.
Therefore, a Balinese kite fan, Made Suprapta Meranggi or familiarly called Dek Soto, initiated a virtual kite competition to accommodate kite fans in Bali. According to Dek Soto, the contest took the theme “Rare Angon vs Covid-19”. The type of kite that is contested is a owl-shaped kite. This competition will be held on Sunday (May 31), through online media namely video conference. “This competition was made in order to fulfill the health protocol without losing tradition,” Dek Soto said when contacted on Saturday (May 30).
Dek Soto added that kite fans or who are often called rare angon, in addition to being very creative, they have to keep up with the times. “With this virtual owl-shaped kite contest, I hope it can become a creative economic circle for the community. Because this becomes a multiplier effect. Not only Undagi (maker) kites get lots of orders, bamboo sellers, fabric sellers and even kite equipment also get benefits,” he said.
Through this competition, his party wants to show the world that Balinese, even in a time of pandemic and economic crisis, can still be creative without having to violate health protocols. According to him, this moment could also be a milestone in the rebranding of Bali tourism. (MBP5)
